Liverpool suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at Anfield on Thursday as Italian side Atalanta stormed to a commanding lead in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie.
The Serie A minnows, currently languishing in sixth place, stunned the Premier League giants with a clinical display of attacking football. Atalanta opened the scoring early in the second half through Gianluca Scamacca, who went on to add a second before Luis Muriel sealed the rampant victory.
The result left Liverpool shell-shocked and facing an uphill battle in the second leg in Italy. Manager Jürgen Klopp admitted his team "had no answers" to Atalanta's impressive performance, which saw the Italian club create numerous chances and expose Liverpool's defensive frailties.
The match also marked a significant turnaround from the previous meetings between the two sides. In the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League group stage, Liverpool had thrashed Atalanta 5-0 away and 2-0 at home.
However, Atalanta's recent form has been impressive, and they will be confident of completing the job in the second leg at the Gewiss Stadium on April 14th. Liverpool, meanwhile, will need to regroup and find a way to turn things around if they want to salvage their European campaign.
